Students compete in ESU’s Cambridge-sponsored singing competition
The English Speaking Union (ESU) held its 12th Annual Singing Competition at the British Embassy Residence in Buenos Aires on 14 October, sponsored by University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE).
Students from 17 ESU member schools competed to win the Martin Garvie Trophy, in honour of the Buenos Aires educationalist who was devoted to helping young people discover and develop their musical talents. Each student performed two songs in English - demonstrating their language skills, as well as musical ability!

The winning student was Delfina Navarro from St George’s College North, Buenos  Aires, who sang ‘Blues in the Night’ and ‘The Wizard and I’. Agostina Calderaro from St Brendan’s College, Buenos Aires, won the runner-up prize for her performances of ‘I dreamed a dream’ and ‘Someone like you’.  The prizes were presented to the winners by HM Ambassador Ms Shan Morgan in front of an audience of head teachers, music teachers, parents and students.

Litty Mora, CIE Representative in Argentina, said that CIE was delighted to support the event. She commented: ‘It is uplifting to see so many young people investing time and effort in developing their singing talents. This event surpasses itself every year in the quality of the singing and in the challenging pieces competitors choose to perform.

Malcolm Rodman, Chair of the ESU added: `I wish to congratulate all the students on their performance and the teachers on the wonderful results in singing and pronunciation. Their language proficiency is phenomenal.’
The aim of the ESU is to promote international understanding and friendship through the English language, and the annual singing competition supports this aim by giving students from different schools the chance to work together. Students at ESU member schools follow the Cambridge International Curriculum, developed by University of Cambridge International Examinations.
